GRANADA
At the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains lies one of the most interesting cities in Eastern Andalusia – Granada.
Andalusia is probably one of the best known parts of Spain for holidaymakers – famous for its sandy beaches, year round sunshine and its cosmopolitan Costal del Sol. However the landscape is also the most varied of any region with hidden caves and beautiful breathtaking countryside.
Granada was made the grandest city in Andalucia by The Moors in the 14th Century. Their magnificent Alhambra Palace remains to this day, one of Spain’s most popular monuments, keeping Granada firmly on the tourist map. It stands at the foot of Spain’s highest mountain range, the Sierra Nevada, and overlooks the beautiful views of the city below and the fertile plain of Granada. It is one of the most brilliant jewels of universal architecture with a series of palaces and gardens built in the 14th Century under the Nazari Dynasty.
It’s an amazing palace encompassing the massive Palace of Charles V, an outstanding example of Spanish Renaissance architecture, the summer palace, Generalife (the garden of paradise), with its fountains small ponds, oleander – an esplanade of modern gardens.
On the opposite hill is the Albaicin, the oldest part of the town is a fascinating maze of narrow streets with whitewashed houses, Arab tearooms and great views.
The Plaza de San Nicolas, at the highest point of the Albaicin, is famous for its magnificent view of the Moorish palace. Back in the centre of Granada you’ll find the Capilla Real (The Royal Chapel) within the Cathedral which is the burial place of the Catholic Monarchs King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella.
Granada is also forever associated with write Federico Garcia Lorca who was born in the village of Fuente Vaqueros and grew up here, many of his poems pay homage to the Sierra Nevada and the beautiful surrounding countryside.
Granada is home to a wide variety of restaurants. The roots of a lot of the gastronomy here lie in Moorish hands, with influences taken from Arabic dishes. As well as the many tapas bars which, traditionally, serve free tapas with every drink ordered, there is a huge selection of restaurants serving delicious food! Don’t forget to try them.
