The Gambia is the perfect, safe introduction to Africa. If you are a first time traveller to this area or to The Gambia itself you need to be prepared for visiting a developing country but also to fall in love with the place. As well as the many attractions of the country and it’s people, it’s hard to find another winter sun destination that enables you to leave the cold of England on a winter’s morning and be at your hotel in 30c sunnshine by the afternoon! More reasons to visit include:
Uncrowded beaches of golden sand
Direct flights – approximately 6 hours and short transfers
Friendly English speaking locals
Outside the Euro zone, offering good value for money
Wide range of quality accomodation and restaurants
Unspoilt and uncommercialised
River, bush and beach excursions to experience the wildlife and people.
What to expect…………
The Gambia is a former British colony; Gambians within the resort areas all speak English so communication is very easy. It is one of the smallest countries in Africa, situated on roughly the same latitude as Barbados. Mostly flat, the country is dominated by the River Gambia from which it takes it name. The Gambia is outside the Euro zone so offers good value for money The Gambia’s currency is the dalasi and in the last year the exchange rate was between 45 and 47 dalasi to the pound. The official language is English, newspapers and road signs are also printed in English. Gambians are educated in English but there are several tribal languages including Mandinka, Wolof and Jola. As a destination it is not over developed with no high-rise hotels, and there are a number of internationally recognised sustainable tourism projects.
