Get to know the island
There is an awful lot to get to know around this lovely island, which covers a distance of approximately 75km from north to south and 100km from east to west. Mallorca holidays in the spring and winter offer peace and quiet, with plenty of things to see and do, whilst in summer there are even more attractions and entertainment to keep you busy.
You can spend a day in Palma, exploring the old city, shopping, then lingering for a quiet dinner, and you might want to hire a car to visit the fertile central plain region, or have a relaxing lunch in a lovely marina such as Portals Nous. Another option is to take a train ride to Soller through the mountains to visit the monastery in Valldemossa, where Chopin and George Sand spent a winter.
Golf is very popular here, which is not surprising considering there are so many excellent courses. The wonderful Castillo Hotel Son Vida is actually located right on a golf course and even offers discounted green fees to their guests.

You can purchase a great range of leather goods, pottery, glass and artificial pearls from Manacor, while Binisalem is a good place to shop for local wines.
What to do on your Mallorca holiday
There’s much more to this island than beaches and golf, although both these aspects feature large on most people’s holidays in Mallorca. But if you’re looking to go beyond the beaches and putting greens, you can take your pick from some excellent museums and art galleries, try out a new sport, or simply enjoy the gorgeous scenery.
If you want to get out on the ocean, the warm, inviting waters of the Mediterranean provide the opportunity for plenty of exciting activities, while for retail aficionados the shopping is diverse and good value. There’s certainly a lot to love about this wonderfully cosmopolitan little island, but perhaps one thing that is particularly attractive is that is it only about two hours away by air from the UK.

Beaches
There are 208 beaches on the island (so needless to say we cannot list them all here), with many of the best located on the south-east coast. While visiting some mean a day excursion from any of our chosen hotels, if you would prefer a beach nearby, we recommend you ask reception to give you some local tips on the best and least crowded in the area.
Puerto Soller has a delightful sandy beach, but it can become quite busy in the peak of summer when Mallorca holidays are most popular.
Cala Mondrago has been voted as one of the 10 best beaches in the world and it is divided into two sections – s’Amarador and Cala de ses Font de n’Alis. Of the two, S’Amarador is less crowded. Cala Mondrago was declared a Nature Park in 1992 and an area of special interest by the EC in 1995.
Ses Covetes is 11kms from Campos and is a popular beach for those on family holidays in Mallorca.
Portals Vells, in the Calvia area, has some lovely beaches and coves that are slightly less crowded. There are three beaches at Portals Vells, which can be accessed by car and then on foot. It’s approximately 8km from Magaluf, close to the Club Nautic Portals Vells, and is well signposted. The three beaches are mostly sand with clear, shallow waters surrounded by trees and nature. Platja de Portals Vells III, II, I are also known as sa Caleta, sa Platgeta and Platja del Rei. Be aware that the middle one, Platja de Portals Vells II, is a nudist beach.
Outside the Palma area, on the busier and more developed west coast, there are lots of beautiful beaches, although you should expect them to be busy. Illetes consists of two pretty coves with pine trees stretching down to the shore. Portals Nous has a small beach and Santa Ponca beach is the third most popular with British visitors, who are the most prevalent of all the tourists who come to enjoy holidays in Mallorca.
Golfing Holidays
With approximately 20 golf courses from which to choose, the island has enough to satisfy even the most discerning players. Here we list just a few, with many of them connected to the hotels we offer. You don’t have to book a Mallorca holiday in these hotels to enjoy their golfing facilities, though, and we can pre-book the course of your choice for you. However, if you do choose to stay in one of our hotels affiliated with a golf course, we can arrange guaranteed tee times.
Son Vida – This was the first golf course on the island, established in 1964 and designed by F.W. Hawtree. It was completely renovated in 2001 and the tree-lined fairways have great views over the Bay of Palma. With 18 holes and playing to par 71 (5601 metres), Son Vida enjoys all the facilities one would expect of a top class course. Handicap required is gentlemen 28 and ladies 36. The course played host to the Balearics Open in 1990 and 1994.
Son Muntaneer – Opened in 2000 and designed by Kurt Rossknecht, this course is suitable for golfers of all levels and even has a golf school to help improve your game. It is 18 holes, plays to par 72 (6347 metres) and has top-notch facilities.
Son Quint – This relatively new course opened in 2007 and is a sister course to the two mentioned above. With 18 holes playing to par 72 (length 6205) it has proved a popular choice. A hilly, challenging course lined with pine and olive trees and enjoying great views over the Bay of Palma, most of the challenge comes from the natural environment and will test all levels of skill. It was designed by Ramón Espinosa and Kurt Rossknecht and has full facilities.
Also worth mentioning are:
Golf Alcanada – A fairly recent addition located on the northernmost tip of the island, Alcanada is a challenging course designed by Robert Trent Jones Junior. It is 18 holes and plays to par 72 (6499 metres). It is not inexpensive, at around 100 euros, but visitors with a handicap certificate are welcome.
Golf Santa Ponsa I – This course is a 6,543m, par 72 course with 18 holes and there is also a 9-hole course Santa Ponsa III. Designed by Folco Nardi with assistance from Pepe Gancedo, it is a long, wide course with many indigenous trees and vegetation, water hazards and bunkers. The 10th hole is one of the longest in Europe and this is one of the island’s busiest courses, with many national and international tournaments taking place here.
Things to do on your Mallorca holiday
Take the train from Palma north to Soller – a great way to view the countryside if you don’t want to drive. Soller is a lovely town to wander around. Don’t miss the Plaça Constitució, which is dominated by the beautiful Sant Bartomeu Church.
A visit to Palma, whether it is to shop (see our introduction of Mallorca for the places to head for) or sightsee is a must. The shopping, as we mentioned in our basic guide for Mallorca holidays, is very good and the range of cultural landmarks and art galleries is excellent. It includes:
Palma Cathedral – Also known as La Seu, the cathedral is one of the finest Gothic churches in Spain. It is a phenomenal building with a great history, and a very popular destination for those enjoying holidays in Mallorca. Adjacent is the Museu del Cathedral which has some interesting medieval paintings and holy relics in the collection, and you can even see sections of the original Roman City through a glass floor.
Palau March Museum is a majestic building with a courtyard that has a small but good collection of contemporary sculpture including works by Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth and Rodin. It is also sometimes used for classical concerts in July and August.
Art galleries and museums include the Museu d’Art Contemporani. The building is an 18th century mansion and the collection offers an overview of the most significant schools of 20th century Spanish Art. It is located near Placa Major in Palma. Casal Solleric has very interesting exhibitions which change regularly. Es Balaurd, at the top of Jaime III, is probably the most famous because of its architecture and has constantly changing exhibitions. Each of the galleries mentioned here are in Palma but there are smaller galleries in other towns on this island that have always attracted artists and tourists on cultural holidays in Mallorca.
There are so many historical and cultural activities on offer we are sure that you will find something to interest you on your Mallorca holiday. The guide book we give you before you go will be of assistance.
The leather industry is mainly found in Inca – not the prettiest place in Mallorca, but many of the factories have outlet shops here, though the prices may not necessarily be less than those in town.
The Gordiola Museaum del Vidre is a factory and museum of glassware. You can watch glass blowing and see some antique pieces in the collection. The Gordiola is located outside Algaida on the Manacor road from Palma.
Visit Manacor for a glimpse into the world of cultured pearls. You can tour the factory and choose from a huge selection at the Pearl Centre on the main road. Alternatively, you can buy them more or less anywhere on the island – prices don’t vary too much.
Mallorcan markets are a lively affair, held weekly in most towns. Markets tend to be a combination of local goods and leather and other goods. We enjoyed one in Santa Maria and the stall holders were open to a bit of bargaining for hard goods. We should warn you that live goods, chickens etc are caged and sold at these markets.
The island is well-equipped for those planning family holidays in Mallorca. For children who tire of the beach and pool, there are theme parks and aqualands and even the Caves at Porto Cristo to explore.
Water sports
A Mallorca holiday is the perfect opportunity to try sailing, which is a very popular sport here. You can hire all types of craft for anything from an hour to a week.
For those who want to get into a bit of windsurfing, equipment can be hired in the large resorts and there are schools for novices. Some of the beaches have great windsurfing facilities, including Formentor, Puerto de Pollensa, Port de Soller and Platja de Palma, to name a few.
Scuba diving is particularly good in the clear, shallow waters of the south and east coasts, and water-skiing, kite surfing, paragliding, snorkelling and fishing are some of the other water sports on offer.

Other great activities include:
Walking, mountain biking, hiking and climbing are perfect options for those planning Mallorca holidays in April and May, when the flora is at its most beautiful best. September and October are good, too, but in high summer we advise you avoid the middle of the day as temperatures can reach mid to high 30 °C. With almost 40% of the countryside under protection there is plenty to choose from for these activities, including the Tramuntana Mountains, the Formentor area and other National Nature Parks.
For wildlife enthusiasts, Mallorca holidays are the perfect opportunity to get out and encounter the local fauna. Birdwatching can be hugely rewarding and, due to its location between Europe and Africa, the island plays host to host a diversity of avian species. As many as 200 species migrate here in spring, drawing birdwatchers from all over the world. The Tramuntana region is probably one of the most interesting, with sightings of various birds of prey.
Horse riding and spectator sports are also available.

Special events
The wonderful vibrant culture is ever-present, with festivals, concerts, literary competitions, exhibitions, recitals and theatre performances held all year round.
